I worked for several years for Chris Booth, the celebrated environmental artist from NZ. Although I honed many practical skills, the real essence of my learning was more subtle. Chris taught me so much about respect, working with Elders, consulting the land and the local community, researching ecology, geology and climate to provide the necessary background information to allow the essence of a sculpture to develop. This way artworks grow out of a place, rather than being imposed from outside.
